Serbian King Peter I Karadjordjević handed over 51 regimental flags to his Army in June and November of 1911.
None of these flags has ever been captured, which is a precedent in the history of modern warfare.
The heroes who were entrusted with the task of taking care of these flags, have gone through all the battles of The Balkan Wars and World War I only to be able to stand proudly beneath these pennants and march victoriously towards the final breakthrough of the Salonika Front on this day back in 1918. Glory to all our great Serbian heroes!

For our ancestors, the heroes in the battles of Kolubara, Cer and Kumanovo, the bearers of the Order of Karadjordje's Star and of the Albanian Commemorative Medal, there was nothing more important or greater than the Serbian Tricolour - red, blue and white. To them, the flag they protected was bigger than life itself, as it reminded them that the freedom of Serbia is priceless and has no possible alternatives. The flagbearers were killed along the way, yet their flags always survived. Very few of them survived, but the flag always did!
Today we mark the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag because of all our heroes and because of all the others who gave their lives under that flag, in the name of Serbia and for that glory. This may well be our most important national holiday, as it tells us very clearly who we are, where we came from and where we are heading.
This is a celebration of our identity, which incorporates our language, culture, tradition, religion as well as the underlying values of our society, the values that make a coutry civilised, orderly, capable of remembering but also aware of what it needs to do and why.
The date selected for the holiday, 15 September, was the day of the final breakthrough of the Salonika Front, the day wherein both our pain and our glory lie, which makes up the first part of Renan's famous definition of nation. It states that a nation is based on joint suffering, past glory and a shared plan for the future.
This is the flag of freedom, of peace and future. The flag of our unity, in our intent to preserve the Serbian identity, the right to be what we are.
This is a different, proud Serbia!
