Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Saturday, while the Chinese capital raised the curtain for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
World leaders and heads of international organisations gathered in Beijing at the opening ceremony of the Olympics on Friday night, Chinese Radio International reports.
Xi Jinping welcomed the "steel friendship" and high-level mutual political trust between China and Serbia, saying that bilateral ties have stood the test of time and are a model of international relations.
Sino-Serbian cooperation has grown significantly, Xi pointed out, which has led to many successful infrastructure and energy projects, and the two countries have supported each other since the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Chinese President said that the two countries should develop relations in terms of strategic and long-term perspective and firmly support each other's essential interests.
Both countries should improve quality cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative and turn the traditional friendship between China and Serbia into more tangible results of cooperation, which will enable mutually beneficial cooperation for the peoples of the two countries, he continued.
China is ready to provide greater support, in order to help Serbia in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and to strengthen cooperation in the joint production of vaccines and economic recovery, Xi said.
Aleksandar Vučić welcomed the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and thanked the Chinese Government and people for their warm hospitality.
Serbia is always firmly with the Chinese people on issues concerning China's essential interests, such as Xinjiang and the Taiwan region, he said. His government is also ready to strengthen cooperation ranging from trade and investment to people and cultural exchange in the Post-COVID-19 era.
