Serbia plans to procure French Rafale fighter jets, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said today
President Vučić revealed this to Reuters, which, according to the British news agency, is seen by experts as "the latest sign that Belgrade is distancing itself from its traditional arms supplier and ally, Russia."
- We have negotiated the purchase of 12 new planes a year and we also plan to buy another 12 used planes from another country - Vučić said.
Serbia and "Dassault Aviation", a French company and manufacturer of both military aircraft and business jets, discussed the purchase and sale of 12 planes, the French "La Tribune weekly" announced last week.
Reuters reminded that three years ago, Serbia bought Mistral, the French surface-to-air system, and in 2016, it bought helicopters from "Airbus".
- We are interested in the purchase of Rafale jets, we are looking for the best way to buy them, without jeopardising our public finances - the President of Serbia added.
The President of Serbia pointed out that Belgrade is also considering the purchase of additional planes in order to replace the aircraft made in the former Yugoslavia.
