FAMOUS DOCTOR HEALTH BREAKTHROUGH! How many steps a day actually looks after the heart
Good health does not necessarily require intensive workout, a regular walk will do. However, one can often hear contrary information about how many steps a day ‘takes care of the heart’.
It has been widely accepted that it takes 10.000 steps a day to preserve our health.
But does it really take 10.000 steps a day to be healthy? The shortest answer is no!
This belief goes has origin in a Japanese company invention, made in 1960s: a pedometer called ‘Manpo-kei’, which translates into 10.000 steps. The name of the pedometer has set what today is believed to be the standard, although not confirmed by science.
This is a dangerous and harmful myth, moving is healthy, but an expert on longevity, Sergei Young said that the actual number of the steps was considerably smaller.
‘The more precise number would be 7.000 and all after that there is no possibility for further improvement’ he said in a podcast.
Two researches have backed up his theory. In the first one, it has been determined that women who have made 4.400 daily have lower risk of premature death than women who walk ‘only’ 2.700 steps. However, the number of steps got stuck on 7.500 and would not make a difference if it got bigger.
In the second research, it has been determined that those who were walking more had lower risk of premature death, but there was not much difference in percentage between those who had been walking 4.000 to those who had been walking 8.000 a day.
But also Sergei Young sets his clients a goal of 10.000 steps. Why? It is quite simple: Because very few succeed in doing so.
‘When I recommend people how much they should walk, I also say 10.000. It is good to have approximate upper value because in that case people have a goal to aspire to. And most of them will actually accomplish a bit lower number, which is around 7.000 steps’ he said.
