ARE COVID-19 PATIENTS FORBIDDEN FROM LYING ON THEIR BACKS? Dr Stefanović solves the dilemma
Emergency doctor Dr Ivana Stefanović explained why patients with pneumonia are advised not to lie on their backs.
- You may have seen those difficult images from the red zones where patients turn on their stomachs. An extremely trained team is required for this, especially if the patient has been intubated. Why is this done? Because, when lying on their back, the back parts of the lungs, on which the heart and other organs rest, are less ventilated and nourished - says Stefanović.
When patients are told to go home and lie down, it is not meant literally, she added.
- Every viral infection, even COVID-19, requires rest. If you are being treated at home, try to spend the most time in a semi-upright position and sleep on your stomach. In that way, those parts of the lungs that are otherwise under pressure are also ventilated. That is the path to a faster recovery - Stefanović explained.
