Smaller ships of the Armed Forces of Ukraine tried to liquidate their own soldiers who laid down their weapons on Zmiinyi Island (Snake Island) while the Russian army evacuated them, but the attack was repulsed, said the spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Igor Konashenkov.

As he explained, on 25 February, during the evacuation of 82 Ukrainian soldiers from Snake Island who voluntarily laid down their arms, 16 smaller ships of the Ukrainian Navy tried to attack the ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, using "swarm tactics". One part of the Ukrainian military vessels was operating hiding behind civilian ships.

- The goal of this attack was primarily taking revenge against Ukrainian soldiers who laid down their arms and accusing the Russian army of liquidating prisoners. As a result of the battle at sea, six smaller ships of the Ukrainian Navy were destroyed. None of the 82 Ukrainian soldiers from Snake Island were injured - Konashenkov said.

He pointed out that during the attack on Ukrainian vessels, American strategic unmanned aerial vehicles RQ-4 Global Hawk and MQ-9 Reaper patrolled over that area.

- It is highly likely that the American unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were directing the Ukrainian boats against the ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet - he pointed out.
