Alexandr Dolgopolov, once the 13th tennis player in the world, surprised the world with his decision to join the defense of his country under full military equipment. In a conversation with the "BBC", the Ukrainian called on the West to impose tougher sanctions against Russia, whose president is Vladimir Putin it will not change its policy regardless of the price the Russians may pay.
Dolgopolov expressed the wish for Russian players, primarily Daniil Medvedev, to be banned from playing tennis, because the decision not to compete under the Russian flag, according to him, "does not change anything".
- I know all those guys personally. I even played Daniil when I was playing. They are nice guys but no offence to them - I believe Russia should be blocked from any participant in any sport, in any culture. I think every Russian is responsible for their government and their president - Dolgopolov stated, who then went on and hit out at the first man of the Russian Federation even harder.
- Just being neutral, taking away their flag, we know that is not changing anything. And even the sanctions that are happening now, even the destroyed economics it is not enough for Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop - Dolgopolov "thundered".
As a reminder, the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February, after which the Western countries responded with sanctions that hit Russian sports the hardest.
